Dumped pesticide kills 160 birds

Dumped pesticide kills 160 birds

Australian Associated Press

The tip has been covered to prevent possible further deaths.

High levels of poison dumped at a landfill site in Western Australia have killed about 160 birds, authorities say.

The dead birds - including, ibis, silver gulls, ravens, pacific black ducks and a pelican - were found within a one-kilometre radius of the Henderson landfill site, about 30km south of Perth on Friday.

Test results released by WA's Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) on Sunday showed high levels of the pesticide fenthion inside the dead birds' stomachs.

Fenthion is used to kill insects and can be found in domestic pest killers.

DEC spokesman Ken Raine on Sunday said the threat to wildlife appeared to be over and investigations had begun into who dumped the pesticide.

"Samples were taken from nearby waterways, air monitoring was conducted yesterday at the tip site and the tip has been covered to prevent possible further deaths," Mr Raine said.

"While we still advise people not to touch any dead birds, there is no threat to human health."
